Codex API key vs ChatGPT subscription

Before buying access for Codex, decide where the work should run and which account should pay for it. A local coding agent, a hosted cloud task and a direct model request are related workflows, but their credentials and billing are different.
This guide explains the decision for an individual setting up Codex CLI or an application. AI Prime Tech is an independent gateway, so its key and account should be evaluated as a separate service.
Three routes you may be comparing
| Route | Credential | Where to check usage |
|---|---|---|
| Codex with ChatGPT sign-in | Your ChatGPT account | The relevant ChatGPT plan or workspace |
| Direct OpenAI API access | An OpenAI Platform API key | Your OpenAI Platform account |
| AI Prime Tech gateway access | An AI Prime Tech key and matching provider URL | Your AI Prime Tech dashboard |
OpenAI's authentication documentation distinguishes subscription sign-in and API-key usage. Local Codex supports API-key workflows; OpenAI-hosted Codex cloud requires ChatGPT sign-in. A third-party key does not add a subscription or cloud entitlement to your OpenAI account.
Choose by the job you want to do
For repository work from a local terminal, inspect the provider options supported by your client. If you want AI Prime Tech to handle the model requests, use a custom provider with the gateway URL and its key. Follow the Codex API setup and verify the active provider with /status.
For a script that sends a prompt and consumes a response, begin with the OpenAI-compatible API example. That is an API integration. It does not automatically provide a coding agent's file editing, command execution or repository workflow; your application must supply the orchestration it needs.
For tasks hosted by OpenAI's Codex cloud, review the current ChatGPT access requirements. Buying gateway credits is not a substitute for signing into the required product.
Match the key, provider and model
Three values need to agree: the key issuer, the base URL and the model available to that key. A key issued by AI Prime Tech should go to https://aiprimetech.io/v1. An OpenAI Platform key belongs with the appropriate OpenAI endpoint. A key for one provider is not a universal login for another.
Within AI Prime Tech, the key's group also matters. Prepaid GPT access uses the Codex group. Any separately offered timed Codex access has its own terms. Claude plans and Claude-group keys are separate. Check the group before concluding that an unavailable-model message means the model is down.
The Codex API page links to the current setup and access choices. Model examples use explicit IDs such as gpt-6.1-sol or gpt-6-astra; keep those exact when testing.
Compare costs using a representative task
A subscription price, an API price per million tokens and a gateway credit balance use different units. To compare them, choose a small task you actually do: fix a failing test, review a module or explain an unfamiliar function.
Record the selected model, the amount of context provided, the final result and the observed usage. Include follow-up attempts. A single user prompt can lead an agent to make several model requests while it reads files, edits code and runs checks. The cost of one short chat answer is therefore a poor estimate for a whole coding session.
Do not infer your bill from a provider's marketing discount alone. Check the rate that applies to your key, any selected plan, caching and service options. OpenAI's model reference prices are useful context; an AI Prime Tech charge follows the gateway's own account terms. See our GPT-6 comparison workflow for a practical evaluation.
Verify the connection before a longer session
- Confirm the model and provider in Codex rather than relying on an old configuration file.
- Test a short prompt with the intended key.
- Confirm the request appears in the dashboard of the provider you intended to use.
- Review the returned error or usage record before repeating a failed or expensive task.
Keep credentials in your environment or a suitable local credential store. Use a separate key for an integration when your provider supports it, so you can revoke that integration without disrupting unrelated work.
Common questions
Is a “Codex API key” always an OpenAI key?
No. The phrase can refer to a provider credential used by a Codex client. Check who issues it, which base URL it requires and who bills the requests. AI Prime Tech keys are gateway credentials.
Does an API key include every Codex feature?
Feature availability depends on the client, sign-in method and provider. Do not assume that an API connection grants workspace services or hosted features. Review the official sign-in documentation for the OpenAI product and test gateway features your workflow needs.
Can I keep more than one setup?
Current Codex CLI supports separate configuration profiles. The setup guide shows a named gateway profile. Check which profile is active each time you compare providers.
