Claude free API: is there a free Claude API key, and what is actually free in 2026?

Search for "free Claude API key" and you get two kinds of results: pages that promise one and never deliver, and Anthropic's own docs, which don't promise one at all. This page is the third kind — what is genuinely free, what only looks free, and the cheapest way that actually works when the free part runs out.

Is there a free Claude API key?

No — not as a permanent thing. Claude API keys themselves cost nothing to create, but every request they make is billed per token. Anthropic has at times given new console accounts a small evaluation credit; whether that exists right now, and how much, changes without notice, so check the console at signup rather than a forum post from last year. A Claude Pro or Max subscription does not include API access either — subscriptions cover the claude.ai apps, not keys.

"Free Claude API key" sites, key generators and shared keys posted on GitHub or Telegram are the other answer people find. They are either dead within hours, stolen (someone else is paying for your usage until they notice), or a trap that collects your own credentials. There is no working free Claude API — the compute behind every call is real, and somebody pays for it.

The honest answer about free Claude API access

No legitimate provider offers indefinitely free Claude API access. Claude models run on expensive compute, the marginal cost of every request is real, and no business model gives that away for long. At Anthropic list prices, $5 of credit is roughly: on Claude Sonnet 5 ($2 / $10 per million tokens) 2.5M input tokens or 500K output tokens — a few hours of active Claude Code; on Claude Opus 5 ($5 / $25) 1M input or 200K output — well under an hour of heavy Opus work; on Claude Haiku 4.5 ($1 / $5) 5M input tokens — days of light automation.

Because a payment here buys more than its face value in credit, multiply those figures by the current top-up rate. The dashboard shows the balance moving in real time, which is the point of a small first top-up: you learn how fast your own workflow spends before committing to anything.

Why there is no free unlimited Claude

Claude models run on GPU clusters and every request costs real compute time proportional to the tokens processed; Opus, the strongest tier, costs the most. Services that claim free unlimited access are typically credential-phishing sites, proxies running on stolen keys that die when the keys are revoked, or bait-and-switch operations that work briefly before charging hidden fees or selling your data.

The honest approach is transparent pricing: credits that cost less than face value, and flat-rate unlimited plans that are genuinely flat during the plan period with no hidden per-token charges.

After the first top-up

Three paths. Add more pay-as-you-go credit if your usage is light or occasional. Take an unlimited plan — hourly, daily, weekly or fortnightly — if the first top-up went fast; the plans page shows current prices. Or do nothing: the account stays active with a zero balance, nothing renews, nothing is charged, and the key works again the moment you add credit.
