# Claude in Russia: what works in 2026 and what doesn't

The short answer: the claude.ai chat and Anthropic's developer console are unavailable from Russia — you can neither sign up nor pay. Claude API, however, works without restrictions when accessed through a gateway: the same protocol, the same models, an API key in a minute, and cryptocurrency payments. Below, we explain exactly what doesn't work, what does, and how to set it up.

## What doesn't work from Russia

Russia is not on the list of countries where Anthropic provides access to Claude. In practice, this means three things: claude.ai does not let you sign up with a Russian phone number and IP address; the developer console requires a foreign card to top up your balance; and Pro and Max subscriptions cannot be paid for with a card issued by a Russian bank. Workarounds involving other people's phone numbers and purchased accounts work only until the first check — Anthropic blocks those accounts along with their balances.

## What works: Claude API through a gateway

Claude API uses standard HTTPS requests to the endpoint /v1/messages. The official SDK and all tools built on it (Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, Cherry Studio, LibreChat) let you change the server address with a single variable. The gateway accepts the same request, processes it using its own accounts, and returns a response in the same format — the code doesn't care which server it calls.

Signing up for the gateway requires no phone number or card: just an email address, a password, and an API key. ## Claude Code from Russia

Claude Code (version 2.1.296) reads the same environment variables as the SDK. Two lines in ~/.bashrc or your PowerShell profile — and it works through the gateway, including /compact, subagents, MCP, and skills.

## Payment from Russia
